We did it! Thank You For Supporting the July Food Drive

Thank you to everyone who helped us reach our goal of collecting 30,000 pounds of canned goods and cooking oil during Volunteer Alexandria’s July Food Drive. Together we collected 33,511 pounds and more is on the way to the ALIVE! Warehouse.

Though the food drive was a success, the need for food assistance doesn’t end. ALIVE! provides basic groceries to roughly 12,000 to 15,000 people each month, and seeks contributions throughout the year to help fight poverty and hunger in the City of Alexandria.

ALIVE! collects food donations at the ALIVE! Food Warehouse (801 South Payne St) on:
Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays 9am – 4pm
Thursdays 9am – 7pm
Saturdays 9am – 12pm

To learn more about donating food, furniture, and household items visit our donations page.

Special thanks Volunteer Alexandria for coordinating this huge food drive and to our sponsors: Ting Internet, Fitness Together, Passport Auto Group, and the Alexandria Rotary Club.

The July Last Saturday Food Distributions

Thank you to the nearly 100 volunteers who helped to distribute food at the July Last Saturday events! Your work is vital to ensuring that ALIVE! is able to provide our neighbors in need with basic grocery items like eggs, bread, chicken, and fresh produce. From bagging carrots and cauliflower to driving the delivery trucks to supply each location.

Special shout out to two groups that joined us on Saturday. The Animal Welfare League of Alexandria brought pet food, toys, and information about pet clinics to share at the food distributions. You can learn about the Community Pet Pantry and other resources they offer here

ALIVE! member congregation Alfred Street Baptist Church brought sandwiches and bagged lunches to Cora Kelly Elementary School and William Ramsay Rec Center for our neighbors in need.

ALIVE!’s Furniture Volunteers are on the Move!

In addition to the huge team of volunteers working at the grocery distribution, we had a team driving an ALIVE! truck to collect furniture and bring these items to families in need. Thank you!

Donors submit a form online with information about items they’d like us to pickup, and social workers send requests for the specific items that their clients need. Often times, the families we deliver furniture to are coming out of a shelter or are newly arrived refugee families in our community.

Without a team of volunteers to load and unload the truck each Saturday we wouldn’t be able to connect these donations with families in need. If you are interested in signing up to help follow the link below.

Special request! Are you interested in helping out behind the scenes of the Furniture Program? We are looking for detail oriented Furniture Schedulers to build the routes for the furniture volunteers. There’s no lifting required, and if you are someone who enjoys working with spreadsheets and calling to confirm pickup/drop off times this could be the role for you. Training is provided and the time commitment would be 3-4 hours during the week (virtual). Contact volunteermg@alive-inc.org to express interest in learning more.

Volunteer at the Del Ray or West End Food Hub
We are seeing a larger number of clients choosing to visit our Food Hubs to pick up the grocery items they need. If you are interested in helping clients select specific items in a mini-grocery store like environment sign up below.

This is a great activity if you are looking for regular week day volunteer hours, speak languages other than English, want to help re-stock shelves, or are just are excited about helping people find food and other support resources.
