Educational Program

• Developmentally appropriate curriculum
• Concentration in the areas of language skills, physical, and social-emotional development

Health and Nutrition

• Vision, hearing, and dental screenings yearly
• Two hours of large motor exercise daily
• Two hours of rest time daily
• USDA Child and Adult Care Food Program implemented (nutritional breakfast, lunch, and supplemental snack served daily)
• Meals served family style

Supplementary Services

• Developmental evaluations
• Speech, language, and hearing pathologists available through the Alexandria City Public Schools
• Play therapy for children and/or counseling for parents as needed
• Educational consultations by Child Find

Each classroom has a lead teacher and one or two assistant teachers. Our director holds a bachelor’s degree in elementary education and has many years of experience in childhood education. For the qualifications of each individual teacher, please inquire at the center.

Philosophy

ALIVE! Child Development Center believes in meeting the developmental needs of each child. We believe the child actively seeks knowledge in a well planned, safe environment which enhances his or her growth in all areas of development—social, emotional, physical, language, cognitive, and self-help skills. Children participate in play activities which teach age appropriate skills according to the developmental and individual needs of each child. The center has a family support worker with a master of social work degree.

ALIVE! Child Development Center protects and respects the dignity and worth of each individual child and family regardless of cultural background. We believe the staff at ALIVE! Child Development Center serve as resource persons and guides for your children, actively promoting his or her creativity.

Our program is structured to enrich children’s experiences so that they get along well with other children and adults, develop their self-esteem, and are prepared for successful learning and positive social interaction in public school.

Services

• Full-time, quality child care
• 6:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.; Monday through Friday
• Open year round; closed on federal holidays

Eligibility

• Open to all children ages 2 through 5 years of age (pre-kindergarten), regardless of race, sex, or religion
• Parents must be working, in a job training program, or going to school 30 hours per week
• Families must live or work in the city of Alexandria
• Each family must apply for a DHS subsidy

Registration and Fees

• Orientation is conducted with the parents and the child at the center before a child may begin
• Sliding fee scale based on family income and size
• Maximum is $195 per week
